Quick in Store Test

I'll venture to post the first review on this lens. I got my handson one of these in a local shop and was able to shoot around 50images with it. The AF was fast and didn't hunt in low light. It lockedon quickly with my Canon 5DII. I shot a range of F stops and used varingISO as well. I had caffeine just before trying this lens, so I can onlytell you that I was only able to get decently sharp images down to 1/60of a second at f2.8. I posted a couple of images with major crops, but theyhaven't come up on this site yet.One is of a man in red robes with a beard(shot at 1/60 sec @ f2.8) and the other just a red store signwith lettering(shot at 125th @f2.8) to check for front and back focus issues. If you look closely thatimage is so sharp you can see the texture on the red paper above the lettering.I removed the tripod collar and the lens is much lighter than the Canon 70-200 f2.8 II.And it feels much smaller as well. I would compare it more to the Canon 70-200 f4 IS withjust a slightly beefier feel.The zoom ring felt smooth and did not seem to creep. Focus was easily achieved with thesmaller manual ring. There was no "jump" in the viewfinder when focus is locked, but justan obvious clarity which I prefer with af light indicator.I was not expecting to be impressed with this lens. All of my lenses are Canon Ls and I usethem in my business, but I happen to be in the area with my own camera and they had thislens and were glad to let me test it out. It worked out well as I was able to leave thestore with my own images on my CF card.The lens feels good in the hand and balances well on the Canon 5DII. I also tried it on a 7D whichfelt balanced as well. When they first handed me the lens it was on a 60D and I found that combinationout of balance in the hand. Easy enough to consciously compensate for that however.The color in the images were right on and rich. Not too saturated. I keep my settings on my 5DII onthe Natural/Faithful setting and shoot Raw.This was a very quick experience with this lens, but enough so that I would consider purchasing one of thesein the future depending on how they how up in professional use.Nothing felt cheap or loose in the lens or controls. There is no focus limiter or panning option. But invarying light situations after Unfocusing to the extreme the Tamron was quick to lock into proper focus.I cannot say how this lens stands agains the legendary Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II as I have never cared forthe weight of it. I have briefly handled it and shot with it, but another reviewer will have to offer thisinfo.If you don't have a lens in this range and need a "fast" lens this could be the one. I have checked reviewson a The Digital Picture and their sampling definitely has it ranked above the original Canon 70-200 F2.8.The weight of the tripod ring on the Tamron is substantial and without it on the lens I found it much moreenjoyable for handheld shots. I would venture just a guess that the tripod ring alone is around 8 plus ounces.The quality of the tripod ming mount appears quite capable and durable.I only gave the lens 4 stars as I didn't think it rated 5 for the sharpness quality at 1/60 of a second. I have otherL lenses that can nail images at this speed, but again it could have been my caffeine intake that day.If you aren't quite certain just wait until after the new year and see if the price drops. There are sure to be a fewprice competitions as these become fully stocked on the market.I think this is a nice solid lens for the speed and VC of this range. If the quality holds up and the AF fully provesit's self then Canon could have a real run for the money on their hands against the Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II. As itstands now for the most part I see a 500 to 700 difference in price depending on sales location.It would be nice to see Canon forced to lower their 2K price for a lens that has been around a couple of years.Good luck and if I get another chance to do a thorough test I add to this review.Hopefully they will post the images I downloaded.

I picked up this lens before a wedding this weekend and it seems to be preforming well. The auto focus was quick and accurate most of the time. The wedding was very dim so I was pushing ISO 1600 on a 7D. While using the lens it felt very well built. Going through the photographs after I would say there are some very sharp photos and some that leave something to be desired. I'm still not sure if I am in love with the lens but it preformed very well overall. I have a couple more sessions this week and will update the review.
