Vivitar 800mm Mirror lens (Sony T mount)
By Bill
Vivitar 800mm Mirror lens (Sony T mount)Let me first state that I am not capable of writing an article similar to those you might see at dpreview or other professional web sites. Actually, last time I looked, they didn’t review this lens. I do own several Sony cameras and several outstanding Sony, Sigma and Tamron lenses. I’ve been shooting digital SLRs for about 8 years and film SLRs back in the 80s.GOOD FEATURES: small, light for an 800mm lens, even if only an f8.FEATURES I DIDN’T ENJOY:1) The manufacturer states this lens has an aluminum body. True. However the integral and critically important part of the lens – the part that couples the 6+ inch diameter lens body to the inch and half threads of the metal (user supplied) T mount – that critical mechanical piece is PLASTIC. Perhaps nothing wrong with plastic – if it is rigid enough, thick enough and preferably reinforced with fiber.2) The lens does NOT have a tripod mount. This means the weight of the lens essentially hangs on the lens mount of the camera. As mentioned, this lens is relatively light, but I still dislike having the lens hang on the camera.3) Because the rear of the lens is plastic, there is very discernible motion between the camera body and the lens. At 800mm, it is imperative that the lens/camera be absolutely rigidly connected. I became aware of this motion while using a fairly massive tripod – attached – of course – to the camera. No matter how lightly I touched the focus ring of the lens, the image would dance around in (and out of) the viewfinder. To prove to myself that the image movement was related to the lens/camera mounting and not a lousy tripod, I bolted my 500mm Sigma refractor on WITH my Sigma 1.4 adapter. This makes the Sigma combination 700mm, effective. I was able to carefully manually adjust this combination with only slight image shake. The tripod mounts to the approximate center of gravity of the lens/camera combination.4) Finally, the proof of any lens is in the image. The images I recorder with the 800mm were soft. There wasn’t a single test image I would publish anywhere. So, you might ask – why did I purchase this thing? Well, I read a review on Amazon that stated the lens wasn’t perfect, but reasonable. A light lens is always welcome. Guess I had higher expectations. It is not perfect and it is not a reasonable lens even for a beginner. If I am able, I will upload 2 images – one from the 800mm mirror and one from the 720mm effective Sigma refractor. In summary, I suggest not even trying this lens. It will waste your time and waste shipping money. The only folks profiting will be UPS. Yes, I returned the one I purchased.I suspect, but cannot prove, that all of the general, run of the mill 800mm reflectors (reflex) are made by the same factory. You be the judge.By the way, I have a 500mm mirror (Sony/Minolta) that I wouldn’t part with. It is very nearly as good as a 500mm refractor – and about 1/10 the weight. I use either one as the situation dictates.
