Product Description
Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens at a fraction of the cost while maintaining its original optical quality. The extension tubes have no optics. They are mounted in between the camera body and lens to create more distance between the lens and film plane. By moving the lens father away from the film or CCD sensor in the camera, the lens is forced to focus much closer than normal. The greater the length of the extension tube, the closer the lens can focus. The Opteka Auto Extension Tube Set contains three tubes of different length, a 13 mm, 21 mm, and 31 mm, which can be used individually or in any combination to obtain the desired magnification. Opteka's Auto Focus extension tubes are designed with all the circuitry and mechanical coupling to maintain auto focus and TTL auto exposure.

not the quality I expected
By Mike
I am not a "pro" but I do have a lot of experience with using extension tubes for macro photography with my old Nikonos underwater cameras, but those cameras didn't have the more complicated electronics that the new digital SLR's have. These Opteka tubes seem to be a relatively new product, and I was hoping they were of good enough quality that I could use them instead of buying an expensive macro lens to photograph jewelry. There was just one "5 star" review when I ordered these for my Nikon D5000 (18-105 lens). I tried to find more info, but that was all I had to go on, and I decided to give them a try.In attempting to research them, I looked at the Opteka web site and it clearly shows an Opteka product with "MADE IN JAPAN", and I assumed that was where these were made.Don't be fooled!!! When I got them the box said "MADE IN CHINA".They are very light and mostly plastic and my first impression was that they were not well made and a little difficult to get on and off the camera. Then I tried them and I kept getting an "error" message on the camera telling me to turn it off and back on again. I tried that many times, and I also took them off and put them back on again numerous times to make sure I had them properly connected, but only one of them worked out of the 3 tubes, and the auto focus didn't work with that one.(I was expecting to use manual focus anyway, so that was not a big deal to me, but the auto focus is supposed to work with them) The other two did not seem to be compatable with the electronics in the camera and did not function at all. I don't think it was anything I was doing wrong in attaching them, since I did get one of them to work. 47th street photo just refunded my money(minus the shipping), so I don't have a problem with them, but it did cost me the shipping and the time and effort to pack them up and return them.I don't normally write reviews, especially critical reviews, but this might be the worst product I have ever ordered online. I feel like I should post this negative review since there are now two "5 star reviews" posted and I wanted to give my honest opinion to balance those out. I understand that no products are perfect and maybe I just got a set that was defective, but I was also disappointed with the feel and overall quality of the product. Maybe other people will be happy with them, but after this experience I'm going to end up buying that macro lens after all. And it won't be made by "Opteka"!

Nice, but not perfect
By Robert G. Scott
I got this set for a gift and I'm fairly well pleased. You really can take some great close ups and capture incredible detail. My only complaints are that it feels cheap and that the auto-focus is hit or miss. When I say it feels cheap, I mean that it's very light-weight, clearly plastic, and you can hear parts rattle a bit. The fit to the lens and the camera body isn't as smooth as I'd like. I often feel like something's going to snap as I try to align the tubes with each other or with the camera/lens. I also don't have a ton of confidence that my 200mm lens is entirely safe when I have more than the smallest tube on. I definitely take the them off if I'm going to move from one spot to another. Even the little bounce from walking around seems like it might be too much for the plastic on this set to handle. The last thing I want is for my expensive lens to fall off because it's too heavy for the extension tubes to support. There's definitely some sag when I have a long lens and all three sections of the set on.Speaking of having all three sections on... if you do, forget about auto-focus. With one section on, you can get it to autofocus about 1/3 of the time. With two sections on, it's about 1/8 or so, and with all three, it's virtually never. I know that the depth of focus is very narrow, so you have to have the distance between you and your subject just right, but I still can rarely get the autofocus to work, even if I use a tripod and keep everything just so...Still, I've taken some great shots, and my expectations weren't super high, so I'm pleased.

Broken out of the box
By brownshoe1569
Aside from the fact that the extension tubes have more plastic component than others, which may or may not hold up to frequent usage and they were lightweight, all that did not matter in the end.Right out of the box the center tube could not be separated from the larger tube. Apparently the release pin was not, well, releasing. I shudder at the thought of this having happened with a lens attached. Not trying these again.
