The Zeiss 1677838 short telephoto is a classic portrait focal length which is further enhanced by the long barrel rotation for precise control of the focus point in the image. The Planar T* 1.4/85 is optimized for medium to longer distances and provides distortion-free performance, which only improves as the lens is stopped down. The fast f/1.4 aperture is very useful for creatively controlling the depth of field and the nearly circular diaphragm creates a pleasing 'bokeh' in the out-of-focus areas. Combined with a DSLR with a 1.5 crop factor, the lens becomes a focal length of 128 mm.

I'm a commercial photographer and honestly cant be happier with this lens. That said lets deal with the gorilla in the room, it is a manual focus lens, and in my opinion thats a plus. The fact that it is manual forces one to pay more attention to composition and focus, which directly translates to more keepers on the back end. I know that in an automatic, USM and IS world this may sound strange, but this lens helps enforce one of the most important aspects of photography, intuition. I now compose and anticipate moments more and shoot only when I know I need to, (instead of street sweeping a scene at 8fps and torturing my future self in post selection).Though not as sharp as the Canon 85 1.2, I feel Zeiss color range is more impressive, it produces images with amazing contrast and incredibly rich and elegant tones. As mentioned in other reviews, the half press focus confirmation is a huge help, and once the subject range has been found you can shoot and re-focus very fast as long as your subject or position hasn't changed much. As a point of comparison, I have used the Canon 85mm 1.2 L for years, and know for a fact that it's auto focusing is slow, very slow. I'd much rather be behind this manual lens in control of its movement than be waiting for a lens that costs almost twice as much that's trying to do the thinking for me (....slowly).Bottom line, if you are looking into an 85mm focal length you've probably been shooting long enough to not need a baby sitter. It's not for the faint of heart but with some practice its manual process and stunning color contrast are worth every penny.Build, look and feel are amazing too if you for some reason care about your lens looking pretty.. 5 stars

If you are working more in the studio or in an area that quick, autofocus is not an issue, this lens is the purist's choice - and it exceeds expectations. Razor sharp at maximum aperture (which is where the standard Canon 85mm 1.8 falls down somewhat, the Zeiss 85mm is equally crisp throughout the range.Comparing the Zeiss to the rest of the Canon range, there is a slightly warmer cast to the T* coatings, reminiscent of the T* lenses produced for the Contax 35mm system some years ago.Using the lens with a Canon EOS5D Mk. II, with studio lights, I've never experienced better quality with the camera. The images reminded me of ones I've taken with a Leica M9 and their optics. When you enlarge the photos on screen in photoshop, there is no visual distortion and lens artifacts are minimized. Interestingly, the biggest difference was when shooting objects that were solid red, typically a tough challenge for digital. The images shot with the Zeiss lens had more contrast, nuance and variation of tone than before. There was also more shadow detail than before.While limited in application, if you are looking for the ultimate capture where autofocus is not needed, this is the ticket. Highly recommended.

I'll try to keep it short: BLUF: This lens produces some amazing images with very elegant colors, however, it takes a while to get used to the manual focus, which is also what makes it fun to use. Not a super sharp lens therefore it does not get the 5 stars, but a very good (perhaps the best) alternate option to canon's 85mm F1.2L.The good: I've been using the lens for about 2 weeks now, and I am in love with it. Solid build quality, just beautiful to look at and it feels great as you take pictures using its super smooth focusing ring. It is fun to put full attention to your photography in every shot, feels old-school, yet fun. I love the look and feel of the images it produces, which are noticeably different from the Canon L type of lens. Great for portraits and product shots, non-moving or very slow subjects. Great for video too.The bad: As much fun as it is to use it, it can be very challenging to get every shot in-focus. I use the 5Dmk3, which gives you a focus-assist beep and visual alert when it locks focus, which can be very deceiving because the camera tells you that you have focused, but the picture is not really in focus. This can yield some very soft pictures which are clearly out of focus. You really need to tweak and learn how to use the lens properly to get good results. Not a good option to photograph fast moving kids or pets.The reason why i give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of how tough it is is to get a really sharp shot at its widest aperture if 1.4. It is possible, but tough. If you are planning on buying this lens, you know what you are doing and are aware of the fun challenges of using this honk of glass and metal. Enjoy!
